Tibbetts, Nicola

Lives in Vancouver, BC

Artist Statement

In the winter of 2014-15, Nicola Tibbetts became a short-term inhabitant of Iqaluit, Nunavut. She began a series of paintings based off her photographs taken during her daily walks that sought to unapologetically showcase the beauty of Iqaluit and Cape Dorset. Tibbetts started to use a new painting technique where she used thin washes of oil paint to scrub back into the wet paint to reveal the white of the gesso on the panel giving the canvas a watery quality of the washes which departs from something purely photographic and becomes more painterly and light-filled. Tibbetts uses this technique in her new work, Vancouver’s Urban Parks and Lakes. Using a limited color palette and thin washes of oil paint on panel, she works from photographs to create a quiet, calm and slightly dreary landscape that is intensify the hints of color.
