Lives in Vancouver, BC
Living near the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver has shaped both Richard Tetrault’s choice of materials and the focus for his work. The immediate urban environment, its shifting terrain and creativity, is a collage of images and encounters that are edgy, and full of a primal vitality. He finds visual narratives within this landscape, exposing the layers that are contained within the seemingly commonplace. By improvising on various themes in a range of mediums for a prolonged period of time, Tetrault allows himself the chance to explore many facets of each subject. His public murals, whether solo projects, residencies, or international collaborations, delve into contemporary issues, mythologies and events. Murals can be the catalyst for research into facets of urban life and culture, and the material and themes for the murals, generated through extensive workshops within the community, adds to the resonance of each mural.
