Guo, Simone
Currently living and working in Vancouver, Simone Guo was born in China to an artist’s family and practiced Chinese brush painting in childhood. Guo's recent body of work in oil and acrylic continues to explore unique vocabulary to visually interpret her understanding of nature and land, presenting a poetic yet stylized landscape world that reflects on personal history and memories, communal sentiments, and broad cultural references. Guo's practice is a balance of analyzed forms or lines, subdued lyrical palette, calligraphic and highly suggestive brushwork. Making a way through the thicket of visual information, her imagery largely references North American landscape meanwhile consciously distills aesthetic and philosophical inspirations from traditional Chinese monochromatic landscape painting, which is often abstract, symbolic and with quality of serenity and sublimeness.
