Liu, Kai
Kai Liu is a Chinese-Canadian artist based in Vancouver, BC, known for his expressive representations of abstract landscapes. He employs painting, printmaking, and mixed media to explore the relationship between observed nature and imaginative imagery. Born and raised in China, Liu honed his artistic skills through formal academic training in his early years. His journey eventually led him to Canada, where he initially worked as a graphic designer in Ontario. Later, he established his artistic home in Vancouver and pursued printmaking at Langara College. Liu furthered his education by earning a BFA and MFA from Emily Carr University.
He draws inspiration from both traditional Chinese art and Western art, examining their integration through techniques, aesthetic philosophies, and materiality in his contemporary practice. This exploration has resulted in a unique blend of cultural influences in his work. Liu's creations have been exhibited across Canada, showcasing his distinctive artistic approach and diverse inspirations.
