Lauren Brevner is of mixed Japanese-Trinidadian-Canadian heritage and works in oil, acrylic, collage, and metal leaf to create mixed-media portraiture. James Nexw’Kalus-Xwalacktun Harry is of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and European descent. His work combines traditional Coast Salish stories, forms, and design with modern materials, such as metal and light, to produce contemporary sculptures, totems, and cedar carvings.
Together, their work combines techniques of carving, painting, and collage with Coast Salish forms and traditional Japanese elements. As neither carving, painting nor portrait, their work resists singular categorization and challenges notions of medium.
