Art at Kafka's: 1983, Mark Mizgala

In a new collaboration with Kafka's Coffee, Art Rental & Sales will be showcasing a rotating selection of artwork at the Kafka's Great Northern Way location on the Emily Carr campus. For the past 10 years Kafka's has positioned itself as a community hub, proudly supporting local artists by providing them with a high-visibility venue in which to exhibit their work. This collaboration will provide a new opportunity to promote AR&S artists and our program, and to reach new audiences outside of the walls of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Art at Kafka's: 1983, Mark Mizgala

"The year is 1983. I’m twenty years old and I have just enrolled in art school. I’ve got big hair, big shoulder pads and big plans for the future.

In this new series of oil paintings, I depict 80s technology. These icons are forever stamped in my subconscious. They are mementos of my formative years.

Here, I revisit 1983 through the lens of 2023. Some things have changed. Some have gone full circle. Today, we take fashion cues from the 1980s. But gone are the cassette tapes. I have a distinct recollection of these small plastic time capsules and the music they contained. My carefully curated mixed tapes were the soundtracks to my first parties, first romances and first road trips. “1983” is a flashback to innocent times, when music and art were my only concerns." - Mark Mizgala
